HUBBARD, Elbert (1856-1915). Little Journeys Made to the Homes of Ruskin and Turner. East Aurora, NY: Roycroft Printing Shop, 1896.
4to (255 x 104 mm). 12 photogravure plates after J. M. W. Turner, numerous hand-colored wood-cut initials. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED by the addition of 3 original watercolor drawings on title-page and recto and verso of last leaf, signed "C. S." (presumably Clara Schlegel, see below). Publisher's linen-backed gilt-lettered drab boards, uncut (some very light wear to extremities).LIMITED EDITION, number 126 of 473 copies SIGNED BY HUBBARD on Whatman paper. EXTRA ILLUSTRATED. Ruskin and Turner was the first book the Roycrofters printed on both Japan vellum and Whatman paper, "a paper that lends itself well to watercolorThe Kelmscott-style initials reflect Morris's influence on Warner. The twenty-six copies on Japan vellum were illuminated by Bertha Hubbard and Clara Schlegel" (Mare Via and Marjorie B. Searl, Head, Heart, and Hand: Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters, p. 26. Via and Searl illuminated numerous copies printed on Whatman paper were decorated with watercolors as well.
