Lot Description

EURIPIDES (ca 480-ca 406 B.C.). Opera. [Tragoediae IX-XVIII.] Basel: Robert Winter, 1541. Second volume only (of 2), 12mo (152 x 95). Text in Latin, woodcut printer's device on final leaf. (A few wormholes to lower corner of a few leaves.) Contemporary English panelled calf, blind roll-tooled floral border (rebacked). Provenance: Laurence Nowell (d.1576) dean of Litchfield (calligraphically inscribed name on title dated 1560); "Brasted" (early signature on title); Dr. F. William Cock (bookplate, note); acquired from H.P. Kraus. Second volume of the first complete edition of Euripides' tragedies, containing the following plays: Rhesus, Troades, Bacchae, Cyclops, Heraclidae, Helena, Ion, Hercules furens. Adams E 1038.
