Lot Description

[ARCHITECTURE]. MATZ, Otto (1830-1919). Sketchbook, ca 1880-1885. Oblong folio (245 x 330 mm). 21 leaves of mostly architectural drawings in pen and ink, a few with wash, depicting buildings and architectural elements, many in and around Chicago. Black roan-backed cloth, gilt lettering-piece to upper cover (spine perished, worn). One page of drawings specifically names buildings on Michigan Boulevard, Washington Boulevard, and a turret at the corner of Rhodes Street and College Street. Following the 1871 Chicago Fire, Matz was actively involved in the reconstruction. He participated in the planning of many public buildings, including the Criminal Court Building at Dearborn and Hubbard Streets, the Alexian Brother Hospital, and the Chicago Hospital for Women.
