Lot Description

GLESSNER, John J. The Commercial Club of Chicago: Its Beginnings and Something of its Work. Chicago: Privately Printed for Presentation to Members of the Commercial Club, 1910. 8vo (240 x 153 mm). Gilt and maroon device on title-page, photographic portraits of members. Original cloth-backed boards (slight wear). "The Commercial Club is and has been of much importance in Chicago. Its records are not easily accessible, and of the first sixty members only four are in full active membership now. I have thought that an account of its foundation and activities, derived from the early records and the recollections of these few men, might prove worth while" (introduction). The Commercial Club was organized in 1877; the Merchant Club was organized in 1896. The two merged in 1907, and in 1909, the Club underwrote member Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago.
