By the time Arthur assumed the Presidency upon the death of James Garfield, he was a widower. His sister Mary, wife of recipient John McElroy, served as White House hostess for her brother, and after his Presidency ended, Arthur and two of his children moved in with John and Mary. His eldest sister, Regina Malvina Arthur, never married.
