Between 1852 and 1857, Olmsted undertook a research journey through the American South and Texas. He sent regular dispatches to the New York Daily Times which were then published as three separate works: A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States, A Journey through Texas, and A Journey in the Back Country in the Winter of 1853-4.
