Lot Description

STEICHEN, Edward (1879-1972). The Family of Man. New York: Simon and Schuster for the Museum of Modern Art, 1955. 4to. Numerous photographic illustrations after the photographs of Steichen, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, Robert Capa, and others. (Long tear to one leaf with old associated tape repair.) Original silver-lettered black cloth-backed blue boards, upper cover decorated in black, silver, gold, white and bronze, edges yellow, orange, and pink (some staining). FIRST EDITION, with a prologue by Carl Sandburg. The work includes photographs from some 68 countries curated by Steichen to form his monumental exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, as well as exhibition photographs by Ezra Stoller reproduced at the end.
