Lot Description
SOLIS, Antonio de (1610-1686) and Thomas TOWNSEND (translator). The History of the Conquest of Mexico by the Spainards. Dublin: S. Powell, 1727.
2 volumes, 12mo (166 x 97 mm). Frontispiece portrait in volume I, frontispiece folding map in volume II, folding map and 3 copper engraved folding plates. (Volume II lacking title-page, tears and losses to folding plates and map with spotting, hinge starting.) Contemporary calf, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt decorated (rubbed, wear to boards and extremities). De Solis, dramatist and historiographer to Philip IV of Spain, produced this "highly esteemed work" in 1684 (Brunet). Townsend's translation first appeared in 1724. Sabin 86488.
