8vo. Folding map, color printed frontsipiece, numerous color printed plates after paintings by Covarrubias, numerous photographic plates after photographs by Rose Covarrubias, the author, and others. Publisher's black and pink cloth, top edge blue, others uncut, original pictorial dust-jacket (some light wear to edges). FIRST TRADE EDITION. Covarrubias emigrated to the United States in 1923, where he eventually became interested in ethnography; this work explores the life, customs, and art of the Zapotec people of Tehuantepec.
