Philander Chase, who was the founder of Kenyon College in Ohio, founded Jubilee College near Peoria Illinois in 1839. The college faced financial difficulties and closed within a decade; Samuel replies to an anonymous author who issued a posthumous attack on Philander regarding the College's property rights.
