The Koran, Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed. London: C. Ackers, 1734. 4to (247 x 198 mm). Title printed in red and black, engraved folding map, 4 engraved plates (3 folding). (Some browning, tear crossing folding map.) Contemporary brown blind-panelled calf (worn, upper hinge starting, old rebacking). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of George Sale's translation from the Arabic, to which he added a "long 'preliminary discourse', a compendium of all that was known about the religion of Islam" at the time of publication (DNB). The plates comprise 3 genealogical tables and a folding plan and view of Mecca.
