LAHONTAN, Louis Armand, Baron de (1666-1715)
New Voyages to North-America. London; for J. and J. Bonwicke and others (vol.I), J. Walthoe and others (vol.II), 1735.2 volumes, 8vo (200 x 123 mm). 10 engraved maps and plates (a few folding). (Short tear to fold of folding map, some light offsetting.) Modern red half morocco, marbled boards by Bayntun Riviere. Second edition, Bonwicke issue. Lahontan arrived in New France in 1683. In 1687, after traveling west with Duluth, he was granted command of Fort St. Joseph on the St. Clair River. In 1688, he traveled via the Fox-Wisconsin portage to the upper Mississippi. His work is considered to contain one of the earliest comprehensive descriptions of the western part of the continent. Sabin 38645.
