Frontispiece, pictorial title-pages, numerous steel and wood-engraved illustrations. (Marginal staining in some volumes.) Publisher's maroon gilt-lettered cloth, gilt-lettered (boards slightly nicked and rubbed). FIRST EDITION. The engravings in this work, depicting views of cities and towns as well as nature, are from "drawings made on the spot, by artists sent by the publishers for the purpose" including Thomas Moran, Harry Fenn, James D. Smillie and others.
