(Spotting and browning throughout.) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt-lettered (worn, lightly soiled, discreet library label). For many English readers, Staunton's work offered the first opportunity to understand the Chinese government, technologies, agriculture and culture from a first-hand narrative.
