Lot Description
(CHICAGO) (CHICAGO DAILY NEWS)
A small archive of 60 items of correspondence (1880-1910), received by Melville Elijah Stone, founder of the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Morning News, and long-time General Manager of Associated Press. Mostly manuscript letters on a variety of letterheads, with a handful of typescript letters and telegrams. Correspondents include field reporters, rival editors, government officials, and utility companies. The Chicago Daily News, one of the first penny papers, was also distinguished for its use of regional and foreign correspondents; a practice well-documented here. Also of interest are a handful of business documents, especially those pertaining to early telephone practices.
