At this point in office, Johnson had stopped signing such commissions, and was using a stamped facsimile. John Haskell King had a long and distinguished career in the United States Army, seeing action in the Seminole War, the Mexican War, and in such important Civil War battles as Shiloh, Stones River (where he was wounded), Chickamauga and in the Atlanta Campaign, where he commanded a division.
