First edition, first issue, with "business" on p. 40 line 11, "nine o'clock" on p. 64 line 1, and "Long Islands" on p. 101 line 10, and publisher's advertisements dated 5G. 4. 86 & 5B. 4. 86. Spine faded, with some loss at ends and corners; boards cocked; manuscript ex-libris to f.f.e.p.; inner hinge cracked; [Together with:] Catriona. London: Casell, 1893. 8vo, publisher's blue cloth lightly rubbed, spine slightly faded, and cocked. Front inner hinge is weakened. First edition. Association copy, with the ownership inscription "W. E. Henley September '93" on the title page. William Ernest Henley (1849-1903), the poet and man of letters, was an intimate friend of Stevenson. He collaborated with Stevenson on four plays.
