Lot Description
A Fine Japanesque Sterling Silver, Lacquer and Abalone Belt Buckle, Tiffany & Co., Circa 1910,
in a scalloped oval form, the surface applied with lacquer to depict numerous realistically rendered autumn leaves of various golden tone with fine veined details, two leaves with curling edges of variegated color, two leaves displaying the intricate technique of "kiragane" by suspending square gold flakes within the top layer of lacquer over the leaf base, inset with minute abalone shell accents to replicate colorful flowering trees. Stamp: (Maker's mark for Charles B. Byron) STERLING 1565 MADE FOR TIFFANY & CO.Provenance Note:The present lot is a wonderful and complex example of the lacquered works produced for Tiffany during the first decade of the 20th century. Starting with the silver buckle manufactured by the Charles B. Byron company in New York, the lacquer work was performed in Japan by artisans skilled in this delicate technique.
