A handsome example of Audubon's Wood Ibis, plate CCXVI from his Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting depicts one bird on a muddy bank, about to dip his open bill in the water. The background shows a vista of an open stretch of marsh with a flock of Wood Storks in the middle distance. The plate is the same, except the trees are more sharply defined, and there is a second flock of Wood Storks in the far distance" (Low). The painting was completed in Louisiana, in April 1821.
