New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. Square 8vo. 366 pp. First American edition, first issue (first state frontispiece; p. 9 with "Decided"; p. 13, illustration Him and another Man misprinted "88" in place of "87"; p. 57 misprinted, "with the was", instead of "saw"). Title-page seemingly in BAL third state, conjugate with copyright page dated 1884; illustration on p. 283 amended, as usual, on cancel leaf. Illustrated with frontispiece and in-text illustrations by E.W. Kemble, and photogravure by Karl Gerhardt. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth-covered boards, elaborately stamped in black and in gilt, joints and extremities rubbed, corners worn, spine faded and rubbed, spine ends neatly repaired, soiling to front and rear boards; all edges trimmed; front hinge starting; offsetting pp. (22)-23; pp. 145-176 slightly proud; old ownership signature on front free endpaper, wear along edges of same; scattered soiling to text; intermittent creasing to top corners; in quarter blue morocco solander case, broken.
