Lot Description

A Gold-Mounted Oak Cane / Walking Stick Made from a Wood Girder From Independence Hall, Philadelphia, PA, by Jacob W. Colladay, Dated "1854"

The gold handle engraved with oak leaf swags above archways, one with patriotic shield, others inscribed, "Cane Made of the Original Timbers of Independence Hall" and "Presented to John H. Diehl/ President of Common Council/ by Jb. W. Colladay/ Dec. 5th 1854"; accompanied by documents related to John H. Diehl, including a flyer for The Independent Mutual Insurance Company of Philadelphia, of which Diehl served as president; a check issued by Girard National Bank and inscribed by Diehl, dated "August 1st, 1866"; a newspaper obituary clipping from 1883; a photocopy of a book page documenting John H. Diehl under the Diehl Family; a photocopy of Diehl's death certificate; an envelope written out to Millard F. Diehl of Delanco, NJ; a business card for Samuel G. Diehl; and three cabinet card photographs of family members, one identified verso, "Anna Breiderchart."
