Lot Description

A Group of Four American Needlework Samplers, Early 19th Century

The first, of latitudinal configuration, with polychrome threads on linen ground, depicting floral urns and flowering trees with birds, along with alphabet, numerals, and pious verse, inscribed, "Delia G Harvey/ Born Dec the 20 1813/ Wrought this sampler 1826 to ED"; the second, with polychrome threads on cotton ground, showing cross-stitched zig-zag border with flowers, surrounding alphabet and poem, inscribed, "Betsey Stewart Made This Sampler in The Fourteenth Year of Her Age"; the third, a small alphabet sampler, worked with polychrome threads on linen ground, inscribed, "age of Sarah in... the... 12 year 1819"; and the last, a small alphabet sampler worked with polychrome threads on linen ground, depicting treads with owls and floral urn, initialed "V" and "G," with alphabet and numerals above"; all framed.
