Lot Description
An archive of small portraits and letters pertaining to the Ord-McMullin Family of Philadelphia, late 18th / early 19th century
Comprising a small profile portrait of George Ord, Sr. (1741-1806), pencil and watercolor on paper, with reverse glass-painted mat, giltwood frame, verso inscribed and dated, "Captain George Ord 1770"; a hollow-cut silhouette profile portrait of Rebecca Lindemeyer Ord (1742-1823), with reverse glass-painted mat, giltwood frame, verso inscribed, "Rebecca Ord (née Lindemeyer)/ of Geo Ord- taken about 1776"; a hollow-cut silhouette profile portrait of George Ord, Jr. (1781-1866), inscribed verso, "...George Ord 2nd...Margaret Biays Ord/ taken about 1819- Still life and...artist", brass case; a cut-out silhouette profile portrait of Rebecca Ord McMullin (1806-1885), stamped verso, "Cut with Scissors by Master Hubbard Without Drawing or Machine," and inscribed verso, "Rebecca Ord McMullin at 18- daughter of John & Maria Ord McMullin/ taken 1817/ 18 yrs old," brass case; a portrait miniature of an unidentified young girl holding basket and leaning on a side chair, watercolor, matted and framed; two letters written to George Ord, Jr. by his sister Maria Ord in Philadelphia, one dated, "July 10th 1792," and both with mention to a Mrs. Woodhull; and a selection of letters, mostly dated from the 1830s and 1840s, sent to Ann Maria McMullin (1811-1890, later Ann McClure after marrying John McClure) and Rebecca Ord McMullin (1806-1885) at various addresses including Philadelphia, Bristol (Pennsylvania), Baltimore, Clear Spring (Maryland), Pemberton (New Jersey), etc.; many of these letters sent from relatives in Tallahassee, Florida, including Rebecca White and A.P. McMullin, and seven postmarked from Tallahassee, with various discussions from niece, Rebecca White, including but not limited to: blossoming flowers such as Althea, Cape Jessamine, "The Crape Myrtle is hanging in pink bunches like ripe watermellons (sic)", as well as peaches ripening and lack of rain, as well as death of a sick child and Uncle John being taken as a prisoner of war in Mexico and who's escape was posted in New Orleans newspapers; and various discussions by a relative of the name A.P. McMullin: from the Ship Julia, describing the rough thirteen-day voyage near places like Cape Hatteras, the Bahamas, and the Tortugas, with a "young and handsome captain"; and mentions of conditions in Apalachicola, Florida including apples, champagne, a furnished cabin, sickness and measles, a log cabin with no glass pane and mud chimney, and "6 friendly Indians"; a piece of advice addressed by Silas Ballou to James Harkness, sent by DeForest Ballou, dated "1864"; a small pamphlet, Gloria Dei, Old Swedes' Church: An Etching by Ludwig Ernst Faber From A Drawing By Prof. H. Faber (Philadelphia: Robert M. Lindsay, 1886); two photographs (cabinet card and carte de visite) of unidentified men, the carte de visite by P. Gutekunst, Philadelphia and dated, "March 1866"; and a partial and fragmentary copy of a book describing the yellow fever outbreak in Philadelphia in the year 1797, including "List of Burials", "Meteorological Observations", "Donations Received", and "Donations of Flour, Vegetables, &c."
