Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Slave Pen, Alexandria, Va. New York: E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., [1861-1865].
Stereoview on yellow mount with series imprints, applied paper caption, and stamped publisher's credit on recto. Verso bears applied paper label with additional information including image number, "No. 2297" and negative credit to Brady & Co., Washington, DC.
One of a series of images taken of the interior of a "slave pen" at Alexandria, where enslaved persons would be confined prior to being sold at auction, this view shows the courtyard, with what appear to be prison cells to the viewer's left and a pair of federal soldiers standing on either side of a closed iron gate to the right.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
