In May of 1970, race riots erupted in Augusta, GA after the death of 16-year-old Charles Oatman, whose body was mutilated in jail and brought to the hospital by deputies claiming he had simply fallen off his bunk. Oatman had been arrested and charged with murder for his part in the mortal wounding of his 5-year-old niece in a tragic gun accident. His death came about a month after he was placed in the county jail.
