Lot Description

[CIVIL RIGHTS]. Library Bill of Rights, 1968.

8 1/2 x 11 in. typed copy of the "Library Bill of Rights," being a list of 6 basic policies governing the service of libraries, adopted by the Council of the American Library Association. Beneath the list, text reads, "Adopted June 18, 1948 / Amended February 2, 1961, and June 27, 1967, by the ALA Council.

The Library Bill of Rights has since been amended twice, once in 1980, and again in 2019, according to the American Library Association.

Multiple policies listed deal with discrimination, including "In no case should library materials be excluded because of the race or nationality or the social, political, or religious views of the authors," and "The rights of an individual to the use of a library should not be denied or abridged because of his age, race, religion, national origins or social or political views."
