[CIVIL RIGHTS]12 photos of activists picketing at Wyman-Gordon Co for refusal to hire Black workers
8 1/2 x 11 in. silver gelatin photographs of Civil Rights activists, many of which appear to be students, picketing the Wyman-Gordon Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. The company's founder was opposed to the Civil Rights Act, and in 1964, when these photos were taken, the company's only Black employees were on the janitorial staff. The picketers are shown marching with handmade signs that read, "Equal Jobs for Equal Citizens," "We have had enough...bring an end to Jim Crow," "Racial Discrimination Has No Place in Worcester," and "Freedom Now."
In July 1964, Wyman-Gordon Company agreed to change its hiring practices.
