Lot Description

[HBCU]. Group portrait of African American baseball team, the Richmond [Indiana] "Acmes." 1900.

4 3/4 x 3 7/8 in. silver gelatin photograph on 6 3/8 x 5 3/8 in. cardstock mount with penciled inscriptions on verso reading, "By Hallie Burden / city," and "Richmond ACME B.B.C. Season 1900."

The Acmes were covered in newspapers such as The Richmond Item, including 10 September 1900 reportage that "The Richmond Acmes, the local colored base ball team, defeated a colored team from New Castle by the score of 15 to 13 yesterday. The game took place on the Hawkins diamond and was witness by 350 enthusiastic rooters. Benson and Sharp served as the battery for the local team."

While no results for an African American photographer by the name of Hallie Burden were found, there are multiple references in newspapers and a listing in the 1900 Federal Census for a Hallie Burden, a 28-year-old Black janitor living in Richmond. The newspaper references span from 1892-1901, mostly dealing with an accidental non-fatal shooting by Burden, and his conviction for petit larceny for which he was put into prison in December 1901.
