The man wears a slouch hat with enwreathed letters "GAR," indicating service in the Union Army, and he holds a violin and bow in playing position. The woman holds a pipe in her mouth. Postcard verso features penciled arithmetic and inscription reading, "Rices at Randolph / 2 slaves." Modern adhered typewritten label notes the man's hat and the meaning of its initials: Grand Army of the Republic.
