Lot Description

[ENSLAVEMENT]. Manuscript bill of sale for a "Negro Girl" named Jane. Arkansas Territory, 1834.

One page, 7 7/8 x 9 3/4 in. Undersigned by James Gibson of Hempstead County, Arkansas Territory, 26 November 1834. Docketed verso with enslaved person's name and price.

In part: "Know all men by these presents that I James Gibson of the County of Hempstead and Territory of Arkansas for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars in hand paid the receipt wherof [sic] is hereby acknowledged hath bargained & sold to Peter T. Hickman of the parish of Rapide [sic] and state of Louisiana a certain Negro Girl By the name of Jane aged about fourteen years of Black complexion. I warrant said negro to be sound healthy and clear of any impediment whatever..."

According to the 1850 Slave Schedules, Peter T. Hickman enslaved 84 people in Rapides on the date recorded.
