[ART] BLANDING SLOAN. Black actor Clarence Muse woodblock portrait [With:] UNICEF cards by CATLETT.

BLANDING SLOAN, James (1886-1975). Clarence Muse at home. [California, ca 1932]. 10 3/8 x 7 1/4 in. woodblock portrait of Black screen legend Clarence Muse by artist, printmaker, theatrical designer, and puppeteer James Blanding Sloan. Titled and signed in pencil by the artist, "Blanding Sloan."

Clarence Muse (1889-1979) was an American actor who in 1929 became the first African American to appear in a starring role in a major motion picture, Hearts of Dixie, notable also for being the first to feature an all-Black cast. Over the course of a career lasting half a century Muse appeared in 150 films, and was one of the first inductees into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.

[With:] CATLETT, Elizabeth (1915-2012). 5 UNICEF notecards featuring the lithographic print Mother and Child, after the original work created in 1944 by prolific Black printmaker Elizabeth Catlett. United States: UNICEF, n.d. Each card measures approx. 6 1/8 x 4 3/8 in. (folded), accompanied by original envelope. Interior with "Peace" written in various languages. Publication information printed on verso.
