[PHOTOG.] DEMLINGER, Sandor. Images of African American life and musicians, incl. Louis Armstrong.
A group of 9 silver gelatin photographs taken or collected by Sandor Demlinger (1927-2019), a lifelong Chicagoan and photographer. In 2003, together with John Steiner, Demlinger published Destination Chicago, a collection of photographs documenting Chicago’s jazz performance venues. The following subjects/scenes are featured:
3 photographs by Sandor Demlinger, including: New York Street Workers. 13 3/8 x 10 3/8 in. silver gelatin photograph. Title, date (1947) and copyright of Sandor Demlinger written on verso. -- Georgia Family Portrait. 9 1/2 x 12 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount, signed lower right by Demlinger. Title, date (1954) and copyright of Sandor Demlinger written on verso. -- Photographic collage of various music publications focused on jazz. 9 3/4 x 12 1/2 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount, signed and dated lower right by Demlinger. Ink stamp, copyright date (1992), and signature of Sandor Demlinger on verso.
[With:] 3 photographs of Louis Armstrong, ranging in size from 7 x 9 in. to 19 x 15 in., including: a candid shot of Louis Armstrong with his wife, standing in front of an airplane, verso with ink stamp "Printed by Whelan," dated 1963. -- View of Lee Collins and Louis Armstrong at the Victory Club, Chicago, IL. Uncredited, verso with penciled notation indicating that the photograph came from the Demlinger Collection. -- Large format view of Louis Armstrong seated on stage with his trumpet in his lap and his hand partially covering his face. Uncredited.
