Native Son. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1940. 8vo (6 x 8 1/2 in.), xi, 359pp. Original blue-grey cloth, spine stamped in black and gilt; pictorial dust jacket. Owners inscription "Ruth E. Sander / 1940." FIRST EDITION stated with "A-P" code on copyright.

Native Son was an immediate best-seller when it appeared on 1 March 1940. In his 1963 essay "Black Boys and Native Sons," Irving Howe stated that "The day Native Son appeared, American culture was changed forever."
