Lot Description

[ART]. A pair of posters announcing African American art exhibitions. 1972-1998.

Black New York Artists of the 20th Century: Selections from the Schomburg Center Collections. [New York, NY]: n.p., ca 1998.

23 x 36 in. printed poster (some creases and wrinkles throughout, small some separations and wear to edges) featuring a figural sculpture of a Black woman wearing a head scarf and taking a proud step forward. Title text appears to the left, and collaborating institutions are featured below: "Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture" and "New York Public Library."

16 5/8 x 20 in. printed poster (several separations to edges, some with taped repair on verso, creasing and wrinkling) reproducing Thomas Nast's "Prejudice" illustration in which an African American child is harassed by a group of white geese. Caption reads: "PREJUDICE. 'What! won't these stupid White Geese even let me go to School without hissing and biting at me?'" Beneath the illustration, title text appears in block letters, and information about the exhibition is printed below, including dates and location: "February 5th, through 22nd, 1972 / Pratt Graphics Center Gallery." Verso features a preface by Romare Bearden, an introduction by Ben Goldstein, and a full catalogue of the pieces in the exhibition, ranging from a 1784 bill of sale for an enslaved person to a 1972 Olympics poster by Kitaj.
