Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA]. 3 tintypes of armed subjects, highlighted by possible buffalo hunter.


3 loose tintypes, each approx. 3 1/4 x 2 3/8 in. or smaller, including:

Standing tintype portrait of a young man, possibly a buffalo hunter, wearing a fur hat, armed with a half-stock sporting rifle, knife, and holstered Colt Model 1860 Army revolver. -- Indian Wars-era portrait of a soldier wearing a 5-button sack coat and infantry insignia on his cap that appears to read "2 / H," indicating that he served with the 2nd Infantry, Company H. The subject holds what appears to be a trapdoor rifle. Ca 1880s. During the 1880s, the 2nd Infantry Regiment was stationed out west, and participated in campaigns against the Nez Perce, Bannocks, and Sheepeaters in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho Territory. The regiment also helped fight the Sioux in Fort Omaha, Nebraska. -- Studio view of two men, likely hunters, posed with percussion shotguns, powder flasks, and shot pouches. The men may be European.
