Lot Description

[WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE - TEMPERANCE]. Items assoc. with the women's suffrage and temperance movements.


Approx. 11 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. cardstock hand fan featuring a portrait of temperance reformer and suffragist Frances E. Willard flanked by the dates of her birth and death with temperance quote beneath. Verso with "Woman's Christian Temperance Union / 220 Pine Street / Harrisburg, PA" backstamp. 

FRANCES E. WILLARD (1839-1898). American educator and reformer; suffragette; founder of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Letter signed ("Frances E. Willard") as national president of the Women's Christian Temperance Movement. Evanston, Illinois, 13 August 1885. 1p, 5 x8 in. (adhered to cardstock, toning). To "Mr. Wm. Watson" stating the she is "confident that I paid the $3.00 membership fee. Will you please fill out a receipt and send it to me. Also number six and seven of the proceedings which I shall highly appreciate." Darkly signed with holograph edit within text. Stamped at top left margin "Dictated to Shorthand Writer."

[With:] COUZINS, Phoebe W. (1842-1913). Autograph letter signed ("Phoebe W. Couzins") to U.S. Attorney General Charles Devens. "Riggs House," 17 February 1880. 1p, 4 1/2 x 7 in. (creasing, toning). Couzins - one of the country's first female lawyers, the first women in the U.S. Marshal service, and a prominent women's suffragist - requests the return of documents from the Attorney General. -- Membership card identified to "Miss Charlotte Davis" for the Rochester Political Equality Club's 1905-1906 Season. Verso with facsimile signature of Susan B. Anthony and quote. 4 x 3 in. (abrasions at corners, creasing). -- Printed suffragette circular from the "Office Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association / 5 Park St. Boston, April 9, 1883." Manuscript address to "Hariette L. Reed." 1p, approx. 6 x 9 1/2 in. The Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association (MWSA) was founded by Julia Ward Howe, Lucy Stone, and others, and was active from 1870-1919.

[Also with:] Maud Ballington Booth (1865-1948) signature ("Maud B Booth") on 3 1/4 x 2 in. card. Booth was a co-founder of Volunteers of American, a Salvation Army leader, and a prison reformer.
