Lot Description
[POLITICS]. COLFAX, Schuyler (1823-1885). CDV and ALS.
COLFAX, Schuyler. 17th Vice President under U.S. Grant (1869-1873), 25th Speaker of the House of Representatives (1863-1869). Autograph letter signed ("Schuyler Colfax"), recipient unknown. Possibly Cedar, Iowa (although location difficult to discern), 1 February 1876. 1 page, 5 3/4 x 9 in., on "Tremont House" letterhead which has been crossed out, old folds, brittleness near folds, few small separations near folds. The content is difficult to discern, but it appears that Colfax discusses reading about a reception for the President and Cabinet held in an Iowa town.
[With:] CDV, shoulder-length portrait of Colfax, possibly after lithograph/engraving. Uncredited (toning, print and mount trimmed). Displayed with clipped signature that does not appear to be written in the hand of Schuyler Colfax.
Together, a CDV and autograph letter signed by Schuyler Colfax. Clipped signature accompanying lot appears to be a facsimile.
