Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA] 13 excavated buttons, some identified to auctioneer and slave trader T. Porter.
Lot comprised of 13 heavily oxidized and worn buttons, approx. 3/4 in. dia., identified by consignor on packaging as "Slave Buttons." Name identification is difficult, though at least most seem to be stamped "T. Porter," or "T.P.," likely referencing Thomas Porter, a slave trader and auctioneer operating out of the West Indies in the early 1800s. The buttons would have been worn on the enslaved person's clothing indicating ownership to Thomas Porter.
Estate of Carroll J. Delery III, Formerly the “Historical Shop”
