Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Union and Confederate currency, incl. $100 note found on battlefield by ID'd officer.
Confederate States of America. Richmond, VA: 29 April 1862. $100 note, 3 x 7 1/4 in. Period inscription on verso, "Found at Tuscumbia April 10th 1863 by Capt. S.P. Dickinson, A.Q.M." This note may have been picked up on the Alabama battlefield by Samuel P. Dickinson who served with the Kansas 13th Infantry (1862-1863) and the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, Co. K (1863-1865). Dickinson was appointed captain in December 1863, so if this note was found by the same Samuel P. Dickinson, it is possible that he wrote the inscription several months after discovering the note. (Toning, light soiling, penciled notations on verso).
Bank of Montgomery County. Norristown, PA: 2 January 1865. $1 note, 3 x 7 1/2 in. Clockwise, the three Union generals and one colonel depicted on this $1 remainder are Gen. Winfield S. Hancock, Gen. John Hartranft, Col. Edwin Schall, and Gen. Adam J. Slemmer. The bank building is seen at center. The bank operated from 1814-1865 and then became the Montgomery National Bank, charter number 1148. (Very fine condition.)
