Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Photo of Gens. Burnside and Anderson near West Point, taken by John C. Brown, ca 1864.

4 5/8 x 6 3/8 in. albumen photograph on 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. page. Uncredited, though known to have been originally captured by John C. Brown. Ambrose Burnside and Robert Anderson are shown sitting together with a Colonel Osbourne on the porch of a farm house across from West Point. A man named W.H. Benning stands behind the generals.

In a letter penned by the photographer to Ida Tarbell in April of 1898 (not included here), he recalls capturing the sitting in September of 1864, and showing the negative to the generals. He reports that Anderson jokingly remarked, "There are no flies on your head this time Burney," referring to a caricature that depicted Burnside's bald head covered with insects.
