PERRY, Matthew C. (1794-1858). Letter signed. USS Mississippi, "Sacrificios Island," 2 July 1847.
PERRY, Matthew C. (1794-1858). Letter signed ("M. C. Perry") as Home Squadron Commander, to Captain John H. Aulick. "U. S. Flag Ship Mississippi, Sacrificios Island," 2 July 1847.
One page, on bifolium, 7 7/8 x 12 1/2 in. Creasing, soiling, staining, few minor tears. With a signed inscription from Captain Aulick.
In full: "Sir, As soon as the U. S. Frigate Potomac, under your command, shall be ready for sea, you will proceed with her to the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. On arrival, there you will report to the commanding officer of that Station, and to the Honorable Secretary of the Navy."
Captain Aulick receives the order, inscribes his location "off Vera Cruz" next to his command, and notes, "Sailed July 2d. One hour after the receipt of the above order. J. H. Aulick."
Commodore Matthew C. Perry had an illustrious Naval career, commanding ships in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, and later as Commander of the East India Squadron from 1852-1854 in which capacity he worked to open Japanese ports to American trade. The resulting Treaty of Kanagawa was signed on 31 March 1854, offering two Japanese ports for refueling and provisioning American ships, and giving the United States the right to appoint consuls to live in these port cities. It was an important start to the eventual commercial relationship between the nations.
