Lot Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. Two Revolutionary War-date documents, comprising:


War-date accounting slip recording payments made including advance pay issued to soldiers by the town of "Plym[p]ton, Massachusetts," February-April 1781. 2pp, approx. 4 x 12 in. Sample entries include "Contra / By Malachi Barrows three / Months as Militia at / Rhode Island His Whole / Due Reckoning the Advance / Pay at £15 Per Bushel."

Plympton, Massachusetts, originally included the town of Carver, Massachusetts. The "History of the Town of Carver, Massachusetts" indicates that soldiers from the town served in many capacities during the Revolutionary War, and specifically identifies soldiers "whose service was limited to the Continental army who served for periods of various lengths" and soldiers "who served in the militia for varying periods; some probably served in detachments that reinforced the Continental army at critical times." Among the Revolutionary War soldiers listed in the town history are men whose names appear on this receipt, including Malachi Barrows, Ephraim Barrows, Carver Barrows, Moses Barrows, Ellis Griffith, and Jonathan Rickard.

[With:] War-date receipt signed by William Mead of Greenwich, Connecticut, acknowledging receipt of payment from "Silas Davenport AC [Assistant Commissary] Purchaser" for Connecticut state troops . 28 July 1780. 1p. approx. 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 in. Docketed on verso. Davenport purchased 496 pounds of beef and 25 bushels of peas from Mead.
