Following the critical and commercial success of Lee's Dispatches, Douglas Southall Freeman was approached by Charles Scribner's Sons to write an extensive biography of the Civil War general. The resulting work, which attracted criticism for focusing more on the strategies of military campaigns than on the social and political events surrounding the war itself, led to Freeman being labeled a "Lost Cause" historian. Nonetheless, the work was a great success and would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize.
