Anna Pavlova (1881-1931) was a Russian prima ballerina best known for her signature role in The Dying Swan as well as for being the first ballerina to tour the world. Over the course of a career spanning five decades Pavlova established herself as a once-in-a-lifetime talent, with her performances both critical and commercial successes right up until her untimely death in 1931. She posed numerous times for Herman Mishkin, who was one of her favorite photographers and whose photographs of her remain some of the most striking and iconic ever taken of a ballet dancer.
