Three Porcelain Shaving Mugs
Late 19th/Early 20th Century
comprising two examples identified to known barbers Jos. R. Traynor and Matthias J. Vollmer, and an example identified F. J. Gould / B. & A. R. R.
two marked T & V / Limoges / France to underside.
Height of tallest 3 1/2 inches.
The consignor relates that Traynor served as the in-house barber at the Bayshore Hotel, also known as the 'Bucket of Blood Hotel,' on Lower Broad Street in Keyport, New Jersey. Vollmer (1833-1909) purportedly worked at a less macabre establishment in Port Jervis, New Jersey. Census returns indicate that in addition to barbering, Vollmer also worked for a time as a cobbler.
