His wide-brimmed slouch hat is worn casually, slightly tipped back. His well-groomed mustache and goatee add to his rugged charm.

A 7-button version of the jacket worn by the subject is known to have been worn by Co. K, 39th Alabama Infantry (Osprey, The Confederate Army (2), p.15). Early Arkansas volunteers also wore similar dark faced uniforms, while the State of Tennessee regulations (May 1861) prescribed a related coat.
