A Detroit & Cleveland Steam Navigation Co. Tin Lithograph Advertising Tray
Late 19th/Early 20th Century
23 x 33 inches.
The City of Alpena, a sidewheel paddleboat designed for the sophisticated clientele of Mackinaw Island, was built in 1893 in Wyandotte, Michigan. She could carry up to 400 passengers along the D&C's "Coast Line to Mackinaw" run, in service to the peninsula's numerous resort areas. The steamer's name changed to City of Alpena II by 1912, but she continued to run the Lake Huron Route until 1921, when she was moved to Lake Michigan and renamed City of Saugatuck. The vessel was rebuilt as a pulpwood barge during the 1930s and used by several paper companies until she was broken up for scrap in 1957.
