A George II Silver Presentation Pitcher
Richard Gurney and Co., London, Circa 1758
hallmarked for Sterling to body, with additional maker's marks to underside
identified to Captain Algernon Ferguson (1867-1943), inscribed Presented to Capt. A. Ferguson by his brother officers on his marriage April 22nd 1897.

Algernon Ferguson was born in London on September 27, 1867. A career soldier, he enlisted in the British Army as a second lieutenant with the 2nd Life Guards in August 1888 and ultimately attained the rank of Colonel during World War I.
He married Margaret Brand (1873-1948), daughter of the 2nd Viscount Hampden and the Governor of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia in April 1897, and the couple had five children together. Through his son Andrew, Ferguson is the great-great-grandfather of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York.
