Lot Description

New Jersey Surcharged U.S. Model 1842 Musket by Springfield
American Civil War

.69 Cal. 42" barrel length. SN: NSN. Metal finished in the white mounting straight wrist walnut stock with full length forend secured by three bands with sling loop to middle barrel band and to the front of the two piece triggerguard. Single shot smoothbore percussion musket featuring a front brass blade sight affixed to the upper barrel band, and a separate bayonet lug below the barrel. Lockplate is marked SPRING/FIELD/1848 behind the hammer, and {US Eagle}/US forward of the hammer. Tang is marked 1848 with the upper barrel showing the V/P/{Eaglehead} proofs. Left barrel flat is struck N.J with a further N.J cartouche struck into the counterpane, both indicating ownership by the state of New Jersey. Single inspection stamp of L to the serpentine. Item lacks the ramrod.
