Lot Description

19th Century Percussion Full Stock Rifle Signed "J.W"

.38 caliber. 36.5" heavy octagonal barrel. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish to barrel, with case hardened lock and brass parts. Walnut stock that appears to have been artificially striped, with narrow butt similar to Bedford County rifles. Percussion rifle with notch rear sight and low brass blade front sight. Item features double set triggers with a curled fore trigger, a capbox to right side, and a wood ramrod without metal tip. Markings include J.W stamped with punch dots to top of barrel, and a lockplate that is marked JOSEPH MANTON/WARRANTED surrounded by simple scroll and floral work. Stock is fitted with several brass escutcheons including four tear drops (two to each side of forearm) and a hunter's star to cheek rest.

Possibly by the same gunsmith J.W. who is noted as having made a percussion Kentucky rifle with an artificially striped stock in Gluckman's American Gun Makers.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
